Trout fishing at Willowbrooke
For the benefit of our future guests, fly fishing on
Willowbrooke dam is monitored and controlled. We rely heavily on
records kept by our guests to help us achieve this and maintain
stocking levels. There is a daily bag limit and a maximum of three
rods is allowed on the dam at any one time.
Willowbrooke dam is very deep in places (five to six
metres) and the fishing is clean with few heavily weeded areas. As
an ecosystem, the dam thrives and there is an abundance of food like
minnows, tadpoles, crabs and dragonfly nymphs. The trout grow
rapidly and are fit and full of fight!
Fishing is possible from all banks and the dam wall.
There is a large island accessible across a sturdy bridge and the
‘island channel’ in front of the cottage is a favourite spot as
trout feed on insects washed down from one of the garden ponds. The
record at Willowbrooke stands at
and our annual stocking policy ensures a mix of trout from ‘stockies’,
a stable population in the two to three pound range and those few
Use of a two-man rowing boat (with rollocks and oars)
is included in the daily rod fee and this is housed in the thatched
boathouse in front of the cottage.
We prefer guests to fish barbless hooks and to
release fish with great care. Trout exceeding two pounds or 30 cm
(snout to tip of tail) may be kept (one per rod per day) and we
appreciate guests recording all their catches and releases (size,
condition, fly, and fight rating) in the book provided.
Willowbrooke is an ideal venue for the beginner to
learn the basics of casting a fly line. Most banks are mown lawn and
there is little weed in the dam. Local guru, Brian Winn is available
to provide casting lessons and will divulge tips and hints to the
keen beginner (or more experienced angler). Should you not own your
own fly tackle, starter kits can be purchased or hired locally.
(There is plenty of other fishing (river and dam)
available in the district and bookings can be made through the
Underberg Himeville Trout Fishing Club (UHTFC).
